Taking Heart in Life Again: Oscar Medidas Labastilla’s “Gapnod”
At some point in your life, you will see yourself as only an ordinary tree from the forest of humanity. But amid these challenges you face within yourself, Oscar Medidas Labastilla’s latest book, “Gapnod,” a term that signifies resilience and adaptability, teaches us that no matter how our lives may seem ordinary, we are still unique in some other way.
In ‘Gapnod,’ Oscar shares his life story, from his humble beginnings to his present life, and the lessons he’s learned along the way. Dedicated first to his children, Oscar wished to write down his life story as it was because he finds love in sharing anything he owns with his family and with others he may encounter along the way. And now, he is here to share his own story with you, inspired by the importance of sharing your stories with others.
The author faced a massive obstacle in writing “Gapnod,” as he needed to relive his past memories and write them down. Even as he continued to age, his recollections got dimmer. Luckily, Oscar had his family, friends, and most especially his better half—Mellie—who guided him to recall the old days that had gone by.
Although Oscar may only be an ordinary boy from an ordinary place, his life had somehow made a “footprint in the sands of time” that, in the words of Longfellow, “a forlorn and shipwrecked brother, seeing, shall take heart again.”
By retaking heart and going through with life as it is, here is the author’s advice to everyone:
“The wonder of our existence is too priceless to be buried in the rubbles of time, its remembrance begging for perpetuity. And what better way to ensure this than by writing it down? If left unwritten, it may dissipate amidst the complexities of life. I therefore greatly encourage others to start writing their memoirs.”
