Pardon My English: A Hilarious Dive into Global Classroom Wits

Rhoda Mei Guarin‘s new book, Pardon My English, is now available. It offers a delightful blend of humor and insight from international classrooms. This collection brings to life the witty exchanges between Teacher Rhoda and her students from around the globe, capturing the essence of cross-cultural communication with a generous dose of laughter. Whether you’re an aspiring writer, a language learner, or simply someone who appreciates a good story, this book promises a unique and entertaining read.

The inspiration behind Pardon My English stems from Rhoda’s extensive experience teaching English to diverse students. Reflecting on her motivation, she shares, “I’d like to share the fun that I was able to capture teaching English to international students of all ages, mostly from Japan, Korea, and Spain. And to send the message that humor can be regional and universal. Some people might relate, and others might not. And that’s okay.”

Building on this personal connection, Rhoda emphasizes the book’s unique content. She notes, “I haven’t seen something similar in format and content in the market, so it’s totally one-of-a-kind in that sense. Those exchanges occurred between me and my students, and I don’t think anyone had the exact conversations with those same people, so I don’t even want to make a comparison.” This distinctiveness is sure to pique your interest.

Rhoda shares her hopes for the book and reflects on the broader impact she wishes to achieve. “Whatever your job is, find a way to make it feel like it’s something you don’t need a vacation from, and you’ve won. I know I have. And to all language learners, it’s a lifelong commitment to practice daily to improve your fluency, make as many mistakes as possible, and have fun while you’re at it.”

The writing process for Rhoda was not without its hurdles. She candidly reveals, “I didn’t record the classes where those conversations came from, so I had to write from memory and embellish a little, just like what a great non-fiction writer does. At times, I felt like some lines didn’t make sense, so I had to revise them until I was happy. I kept reminding myself to write to express, not to impress.”

For aspiring writers, Rhoda’s journey is a beacon of encouragement. She advises, “This is my third publishing, and the last two didn’t work out, so I suggest you take a rest if you’re tired, but don’t ever give up on your dreams. Or they’ll haunt you forever and give you nightmares for the rest of your life. Kidding aside, my advice is to find your other passions, invest in yourself, and use that drive to educate, entertain, or encourage others. The money will follow.” Let Rhoda’s journey inspire and motivate you on your own writing path.
