A Superstar Tribute: Why Lorenzo Templonuevo Wrote NORA AUNOR DAKILA!

The legacy of a superstar is immortal. In the wake of Nora Aunor’s recent passing, Lorenzo Fuentes Templonuevo knew this by heart. With deep admiration for the late legend, Lorenzo wrote a tribute that celebrates, not just her iconic career, but the soul that made her a Philippine cultural beacon. Through the pages, Lorenzo made sure that the superstar’s legacy lives eternally to inspire the hearts of generations to come.

To know more about the book, 8Letters had an exclusive chat with Lorenzo on how the book came into fruition.

The Superstar’s Greatness Explored

The book further offers a reflective exploration of Ms. Nora’s greatness as a topnotch artist using Theo Winter’s four hallmarks of the great: humility (pagpapakumbaba), respect (paggalang), courage (katapangan) and reason (katwiran), which, he firmly believes, assure the great of a thankful nation’s continued remembrance and celebration long after their passing.

A Noranian Going the Extra Mile

Nora Aunor’s enduring star power proved advantageous for Lorenzo as the internet became his invaluable resource. “This is because, as everybody knows, the internet has so much to offer when it comes to anything and everything about Ms. Nora,” he stated. In the tip of his fingers was a wealth of news articles, features, scholarly works, and diverse content about the celebrated actress, though he kept in mind to tediously validate their sources. The project evolved into a labor of fan love. “Since I am inherently interested in the works, artistry, and legacy of Ms. Nora, the process of unearthing and discovering the twists and turns, ups and downs, and on the whole the greatness of her extraordinary life as a true blue artist has been fun for me,” Lorenzo shared.

But beyond the marvel for the spectacle of it all, it’s the “unprecedented artistry” of Nora through her astounding body of work—including radio, recording, TV, commercials, films, theater, and concerts—and her philanthropy for Filipino arts and culture that fueled Lorenzo to write the tribute. “[I] was motivated to preserve and perpetuate Ms. Nora’s memory for posterity by introducing her works, her feats and her contribution to nation building, especially to the younger and future generations who have not witnessed the height of her superstardom as The Phenomenon, and thus, be deprived of knowing, appreciating and valuing her as well as themselves as a Filipino,” the author said.

The Human Within the Superstar

Aside from celebrating her artistic greatness, Lorenzo felt the importance of, just the same, acknowledging the bare human spirit and frailties of this extraordinary artist, many of which are common knowledge already. That her life narrative simply echoes the same important lesson we’ve learned from other great men and women before her: that greatness is not perfection nor absolute holiness, but it is humanity – with all its vulnerabilities, mistakes, warts and all – triumphing against all odds to achieve uncommon feats that serve the good of the many. Lorenzo emphasized, “As chronicled in the book, Ms. Nora’s own story, from obscurity to substantive prominence, inspires and invites us to seek and pursue our own unique paths to greatness.”Among the esteemed 11 luminaries who were awarded as National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts, Ms. Nora shines as the first and only female actor to receive the accolade. She captivated audiences with her signature quiet-yet-profound acting style. Her dewy eyes spoke a kaleidoscope of emotions in just a fleeting glance, while barely saying a word. Lorenzo explained, “She simply transformed herself into the character that she was portraying, be it as a school teacher who slept with the enemy in Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos (1976), a visionary-healer in Himala (1982), an obsessed fan girl in Bona (1980), or an infertile midwife in Thy Womb (2012).”

A Tour-de-force Performance

Ask a passerby to name their favorite Nora Aunor moment, and you’ll likely hear her most referenced lines in Himala (1982) or that iconic plea from The Flor Contemplacion Story (1995). Yet, Lorenzo’s choice strikes differently. It wasn’t a film role that tugged his heartstrings the most, but the actress’ bold pivot into theater with DH (1992). On a single stage, Nora portrayed four different domestic helper roles in four stories, four circumstances, and four countries. It was a giant flex of her unmatched versatility in a world she doesn’t normally conquer. “I consider [it] as the best singular performance that showcased her brilliance, genius, versatility and endurance as a one-of-a-kind acting great.” he exclaimed.

In the most perfect description, he narrated, “In the open air Rajah Sulayman Theater in Fort Santiago, with the moon and star-lit black sky as ceiling and the rhythmic flow of the Pasig River as sound score, Ms. Nora captivated us, the audience, with her heart-felt performance; her delivery and voice projection of long lines from the start of the play to its finish, without microphones, from her whispers to her screams, she glued us at the edge of our seat in anticipation of what’s going to happen next. Then at the curtain call, we accorded Ms. Nora a well-deserved standing ovation and a rousing, thunderous applause, for a job masterfully done and with flying colors.” Nora was evidently a force to be reckoned with.

Lorenzo’s mission to preserve Nora’s legacy is a profound testament of two facts: the actress’s boundless impact on generations, and the enchanting power of literature to capture and immortalize a legend’s essence. In his own words, “What an acting giant Ms. Nora had become, proving to all and sundry that she was peerless, a class of her own.”
