But how does a grandfather’s love shape stories for modern children? What secrets do his characters whisper about resilience, heritage, and the quiet power of family? And why does he believe stories are the greatest legacy we can leave?
In this heartfelt Q&A, Edwin C. Africano opens his writer’s toolbox, sharing the inspiration behind his beloved characters, the joys of seeing grandchildren become his first readers, and how he hopes his stories will guide all children to carry their own legacies forward.
What inspired you to use ants as protagonists to teach resilience and faith to young readers?
Ants are fascinating creatures—they’re always busy, incredibly hardworking, and resilient. I see them around my home all the time, tirelessly working together, and that inspired me to use them as symbols of perseverance and teamwork.
How does the book balance themes of teamwork and environmental challenges in a way that’s accessible for ages 4–8?
The story is told in a simple and engaging way that young readers can relate to. Through Annabelle and Anthony’s journey, children see how working together can overcome even the toughest challenges. The book introduces environmental issues in a gentle, age-appropriate manner, helping kids understand the importance of teamwork, problem-solving, and caring for the world around them.
Why is it important for children’s stories to address topics like natural disasters or loss of home, and how does this book approach those themes gently?
Natural disasters like floods and typhoons are real and unavoidable. Some children may have already experienced them, so it’s important to provide stories that offer comfort and encouragement. This book helps young readers understand that even in difficult times, they can be strong, courageous, and family-oriented. It reassures them that hardships will pass, and with love, support, and perseverance, they can rebuild and move forward.
The ants meet others who’ve also lost their homes—what message do you hope kids take away about community and helping others?
The story emphasizes that two heads (and hands) are always better than one. By helping others, we create a more compassionate and supportive world. It teaches children the value of kindness, cooperation, and lifting each other up in times of need.
How can parents and teachers use this story to spark conversations about courage and perseverance in tough times?
This book provides an opportunity to talk about real-world challenges, especially in light of climate change and global warming. It encourages young readers to develop resilience and preparedness while also highlighting the importance of environmental conservation. Parents and teachers can use the story to discuss how we can protect our planet and support one another during difficult times.
What role does faith play in Annabelle and Anthony’s journey, and how does it resonate with diverse audiences?
Faith is portrayed as a source of inner strength, courage, and determination. Annabelle and Anthony’s journey shows that believing in oneself and in a greater purpose can help overcome obstacles. While the story has universal themes, the message of hope and perseverance can resonate with readers from all backgrounds.
Are there plans for more adventures with Annabelle and Anthony? What’s next for these tiny heroes?
Yes! A sequel is already in the works, and I’m also planning another book geared toward older children and young readers. There are many more adventures ahead for Annabelle and Anthony!
