Healing Bonds: A Memoir of Transformation and Mother-Daughter Dynamics

We had a one-on-one with author, Anna Florentino for her book, Cutting the Cord where we find strength in vulnerability and shared stories.

1. Your book is both a memoir and a healing guide. What inspired you to blend your personal journey with guided reflections for readers? How do you hope this format impacts them?

Over the years, I’ve worked on healing my relationships, especially with my mother. Writing about my life felt natural because I now understand the lessons I’ve learned. The guided reflections are what I wish I could have told myself back then—offering readers a chance to reflect on their own experiences and create meaningful change.

2. Mother-daughter relationships can be deeply personal and nuanced. Were there moments during the writing process when revisiting your experiences felt particularly challenging or cathartic?

Yes, there were moments when writing felt difficult, especially revisiting painful experiences. But being emotionally and mentally prepared to share something so deeply personal made the process feel more manageable. It was cathartic to reflect on how far I’ve come and to transform those challenges into something that could help others.

3. The book includes interviews with other women. How did their stories shape or deepen the message you wanted to convey about the complexities of mother-daughter bonds?

The interviews added depth to the message by highlighting how each woman’s relationship with her mother is unique yet universally relatable. Despite the differences in their experiences, there were common threads—shared wounds or emotions from childhood—that connected their stories to mine and to what readers might feel. It reinforced the idea that mother-daughter relationships are both deeply personal and profoundly universal.

4. One of the themes in Cutting the Cord is self-acceptance and freedom. What practical advice can you offer women who are just beginning to confront hidden patterns and old wounds in their maternal connections?

Start by acknowledging the pain and wounds from your childhood—both what happened and what you feel was missing. Allow yourself to feel those emotions without judgment. Seek support; there are so many tools and resources available today. Don’t try to navigate it alone—reach out for professional help that aligns with your values. Healing is a process, and having the right support system can make all the difference.

5. Healing often involves exploring uncomfortable truths. How do you balance honesty with compassion when sharing your journey and encouraging readers to reflect on their own?

Self-compassion is key—approaching yourself with unconditional kindness. Learn to befriend your emotions, even the uncomfortable ones, because as you delve deeper, you’ll uncover bittersweet truths that may be hard to accept. Remind yourself that it’s okay to seek help from those who have walked this path before you. Their guidance can provide support and perspective as you navigate your own healing journey.

Cutting the Cord will soon be available on February 4. Stay tuned for more details.
