Everything we have right now, we owe to the classics; thus I’ve always been an admirer of writers who are forward-looking in a way that respects, internalizes, utilizes, and preaches the wisdom of past thinkers. DA Chan wrote “The Jackal King and The Threads of Wisdom” with so much panache, and he did so not by carelessly interpreting “The Emperor’s New Clothes” through the lens of postmodernism and woke culture, but by truly understanding the timeless profundity of Hans Christian Andersen. Chan’s writing is delightful and brave, considering that he wants us to revisit the lessons of the past and risking offending the very people who need to learn those lessons.
