And with 95% of its abysses remaining unmapped, this only reinforces the unsettling unfamiliarity we had of our own home—a fact that will doubtlessly remain indefinitely. As oceans form a significant portion of the planet, any anomaly related to it is an immediate topic of interest.

Recent geological disturbances within the world’s largest volcanic crater, the Apolaki Caldera, sparked concerns about the potential resurgence of the million-year-old inactive formation. A group of researchers set out to investigate what this entails for the infamous Pacific Ring of Fire nearby, only to uncover something far older than their initial fears.
